(Burlington, ON) – During the first round of the PGA Women’s Championship of Canada presented by PING, Vanessa Borovilos carded three birdies and an eagle, offset by just a single bogey, to shoot 67 to lead by one stroke over fellow Golf Canada National Amateur Squad member Tillie Claggett.
“Honestly, I was telling everyone I was kind of just cruising. I was singing a couple songs in my head, had a little bit of Morgan Wallen stuck in there,” said Borovilos, who is looking quite ‘dangerous’ atop the leaderboard. “I was just taking my time out there, walking slow and when we were waiting I was just looking out at the lake and wasn’t really thinking too much about the golf (between shots).”
Borovilos began her day with a birdie after nearly holing her tee shot on the par-3 second hole, and then took advantage of Nos. 11 and 12, back-to-back par 5s, before making par on her closing six holes to sign for a round of 4-under.
The Etobicoke golfer was the American Junior Golf Association’s No. 3 ranked junior woman and No. 1 Canadian of the class of 2024 before beginning her collegiate career at Texas A&M this past year.
Her strong play continued at the division I level, as she picked up a win and two second place finishes as a freshman.
Borovilos’ career thus far has made her one of the most notable Canadian amateur golfers since Brooke Henderson, who - as fate would have it - won this event at Burlington Country Club exactly 10 years go.
“I think (collegiate golf) has put me in some situations where I’ve been tested by the pressure. During our NCAA regionals I had had a chance to get up and down (to win) and that didn't go in, but it's continuing to put myself in those situations,” said Borovilos. “So, on the bigger stages like the LPGA Tour, I'll be ready for those moments.”
In addition to her experience at the collegiate level, Borovilos knows she also has the support of her Golf Canada team.
“They truly want to help, and that's the best part,” said Borovilos. “I know I can call (Salimah Mussani) whenever, just to rant, even, if I need to, but she did a great job helping all of us prepare this week, not even on swing stuff, but just course management, making sure we're not throwing away easy strokes here and there, and I know I'm going to have a chat with her after this.
This year’s championship is the final event of the She Plays Golf series, which offers an exemption to the event champion as well as the season-long leader of the order of merit.
Meanwhile, 2024 PGA of Canada Female Player of the Year Casey MacNeil is the low professional after carding a first-round 70.
The second round of the 54-hole PGA Women’s Championship of Canada presented by PING will begin at 7:30 A.M. on Wednesday morning.
